Over all, the new measurements shake up what have long been considered the average outlines of the American body. For years, an average woman was thought to be a size 8, although some circles had bumped that up to size 12 in recent years. But even the women who came in on the small side in the SizeUSA survey look more like what the longtime clothing industry standards would consider a size 14 – the size at which ”plus size” clothing begins.

Industry standards set a size 8 at a 35-inch bust, a 27-inch waist, and 37.5-inch hip. In the survey, white women ages 18 to 25 came in, on average, 38-32-41, with white women ages 36 to 45 coming in at 41-34-43. (Barbie, long the plastic bane of body image, is said to have measurements that project to about 39-18-33.) In that same age group, black women measure, on average, 43-37-46, Hispanic women 42.5-36-44, and ”other” women, which researchers said meant mostly Asian, 41-35-43.

Similarly, most men are larger than the traditional 40 regular, long considered the average. A 40 regular, according to standards, means a 40-inch chest, 34-inch waist, and 40-inch hip, with a 15.5-inch collar. In the survey, white men ages 18 to 25 had, on average, a 41-inch chest, 35-inch waist, 41-inch hips and a 16-inch collar (that is raw neck size – shirts are generally sized at least a half-inch bigger).

From the ages of 36 to 45, white men came in at 44-38-42, black men 43-37-42, Hispanic men 44-38-42 and ”other” 42-37-41. ”Waists are the first problem, ” said Jim Lovejoy, the director of SizeUSA and a director at TC2, the Cary, N.C., technology company whose machines did the survey. ”The numbers show that we’re complex, but we’re definitely getting heavier, and it’s primarily in the waist – and the hips follow the waist.” The last national survey was done in 1941, when the United States Department of Agriculture sent out researchers with tape measures to size up the population in anticipation of having to design military uniforms for World War II.

Sirvart Mellian, an anthropologist and a member of the board that sets the clothing size standards for the American Society of Testing and Materials, said those numbers were then taken by the mail-order industry to design clothing sizes. But they measured a population far less diverse than today’s.

As more Americans have become overweight, the testing agency has increased the measurements for the standard sizes. Clothing companies, too, began using ”vanity sizing,” putting, say, a size 6 label on a size 10 in the hopes of luring a customer. Even men’s sizes, which are considered more accurate because they are labeled in inches, are often ”relaxed” to measure an inch bigger than the advertised size.

But until now, no one has gone out and updated the actual measurements. Clothing companies wanted updated information to better design products to fit their customers. ”This is a landmark deal,” said William Dillard III, vice president for replenishment at Dillard’s department stores, a sponsor.

Researchers weighted their samples according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study of average height and weight to make sure they did not count too many people who were especially heavy or light, short or tall. When the C.D.C. completed its study, in 1994, the median weight for women was 144 pounds, for men, 176 pounds.

The SizeUSA median height remained the same (5 feet 4 inches for women, 5 feet 9 inches for men), but the median weight increased by four pounds for each sex. But the numbers suggested that people have not simply gotten bigger; they have gotten rounder in the middle. Women whose busts fit a standard size 8 were 2 inches bigger than the standard in the waist, and an inch bigger in the hips.

Women who fit a size 16 in the waist were 2 inches smaller than the standard in the hips and 1.5 inches smaller in the bust. Measurements did not differ much by region or by education – the average weight of the men and women combined was about 155 pounds whether people had less than a high school diploma or more than a college degree.

  • People who earned up to $25,000 a year weighed an average of 152 pounds – 8 pounds less than the average for those who earned $50,000 to $75,000, but about the same as people who earned more than $75,000.

The reason that plus size patterns are not curvy or are much less curvy is because as a body gains weight, the small depressions of the body fill in and commensurate padding isn’t added to the high points.

  • As more rain falls, larger sloping depressions fill in further.

Another reason plus size patterns are flatter as opposed to curvier is due to styling. In larger sizes, people’s bodies form rolls of flesh. So while it is possible to draft to emphasize the size and location of rolls, I don’t know anyone who would consider that a feature worth paying for. Now here’s the back to back comparison of a thin vs plus sized woman from yesterday’s post. On each respective body, I drew a line at the waist and then copied and pasted the same line over the bust and hips. In the image you can see there’s a significant gap between the thin woman’s waist, hip and bust size.

This difference is not as pronounced in the plus sized figure. The bust of the plus sized woman is almost the same as her waist and the hip is only a bit larger than her waist. True, without measurements we cannot say for certain that the thinner woman is curvy but we can definitely eliminate the plus sized woman from the curvy pool.

A basic top pattern for the larger woman will be a trapezoid with waist and hip nearly the same and the pattern for the thinner woman would be an hourglass. The curvy-definition disconnect between consumer culture and the apparel industry may become a greater problem over the year to come; new sizing charts are working their way through committee and a dramatic change is the addition of measurements for curvy women,

I told a couple of women about it and they became very excited but unfortunately, they assumed it mean plus sized. Curvy sizes will range (within the D5585) from sizes 00-20. Very thin women can be significantly curvier than plus sized because from a technical (pattern) standpoint, patterns for thinner people are significantly curvier than those for plus sizes.

I’m not certain what if any long term trend will result in adoption of the new charts. I only know that you will have to know the difference, Already there are dress forms specific to the curvy body type (I bought one ) and in a variety of sizes. Meaning that if you order a curvy form and were expecting a plus sized form, you will be disappointed and it won’t be the vendor’s fault.

Likewise, if you ask a pattern maker to use the ASTM dimensions of a curvy size 18 for your patterns, you may be disappointed to learn the waist may be much smaller than you had expected. One thing is clear, the creation of a curvy fit profile means it is likely that pants sized for pear shapes may become more common and it is possible there will be a set aside for this designation at retail.

Frankly, I can’t imagine how retailers are going to pitch it. Slightly off topic: It used to be (has always been) that a simple 8-10 inches was subtracted from the hip measure to arrive at the waist measure across the board but using this,75 equation is more accurate because it is relative to the body in question -which is how we draft patterns.

Among the findings: older men have trimmer thighs than younger men. Black women are larger than other women, but they are also most likely to have the classic hourglass figure. Sixty-four percent of women are pear-shaped, and 30 percent are ”straight,” meaning they had little perceptible waist.

Nineteen percent of men are ”portly,” and another 19 percent have ”lower front waists,” meaning, the researchers said, they had to look under a belly to find the waist. Men over 45 are most likely to have potbellies, women over 36, bigger hips (though black women older than 55 have smaller hips than those 46 to 55).

Over all, the new measurements shake up what have long been considered the average outlines of the American body. For years, an average woman was thought to be a size 8, although some circles had bumped that up to size 12 in recent years. But even the women who came in on the small side in the SizeUSA survey look more like what the longtime clothing industry standards would consider a size 14 – the size at which ”plus size” clothing begins.

Industry standards set a size 8 at a 35-inch bust, a 27-inch waist, and 37.5-inch hip. In the survey, white women ages 18 to 25 came in, on average, 38-32-41, with white women ages 36 to 45 coming in at 41-34-43. (Barbie, long the plastic bane of body image, is said to have measurements that project to about 39-18-33.) In that same age group, black women measure, on average, 43-37-46, Hispanic women 42.5-36-44, and ”other” women, which researchers said meant mostly Asian, 41-35-43.

Similarly, most men are larger than the traditional 40 regular, long considered the average. A 40 regular, according to standards, means a 40-inch chest, 34-inch waist, and 40-inch hip, with a 15.5-inch collar. In the survey, white men ages 18 to 25 had, on average, a 41-inch chest, 35-inch waist, 41-inch hips and a 16-inch collar (that is raw neck size – shirts are generally sized at least a half-inch bigger).

From the ages of 36 to 45, white men came in at 44-38-42, black men 43-37-42, Hispanic men 44-38-42 and ”other” 42-37-41. ”Waists are the first problem, ” said Jim Lovejoy, the director of SizeUSA and a director at TC2, the Cary, N.C., technology company whose machines did the survey. ”The numbers show that we’re complex, but we’re definitely getting heavier, and it’s primarily in the waist – and the hips follow the waist.” The last national survey was done in 1941, when the United States Department of Agriculture sent out researchers with tape measures to size up the population in anticipation of having to design military uniforms for World War II.

Sirvart Mellian, an anthropologist and a member of the board that sets the clothing size standards for the American Society of Testing and Materials, said those numbers were then taken by the mail-order industry to design clothing sizes. But they measured a population far less diverse than today’s.

  • As more Americans have become overweight, the testing agency has increased the measurements for the standard sizes.
  • Clothing companies, too, began using ”vanity sizing,” putting, say, a size 6 label on a size 10 in the hopes of luring a customer.
  • Even men’s sizes, which are considered more accurate because they are labeled in inches, are often ”relaxed” to measure an inch bigger than the advertised size.

But until now, no one has gone out and updated the actual measurements. Clothing companies wanted updated information to better design products to fit their customers. ”This is a landmark deal,” said William Dillard III, vice president for replenishment at Dillard’s department stores, a sponsor.

”You wouldn’t believe how many decisions get made off those standards.” Britain did a similar study in 2001, and France and Mexico, too, are in different stages of sizing surveys. SizeUSA surveyed people at department stores and corporate office buildings, at a trade show, an outlet mall and on university and college campuses.

Researchers weighted their samples according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study of average height and weight to make sure they did not count too many people who were especially heavy or light, short or tall. When the C.D.C. completed its study, in 1994, the median weight for women was 144 pounds, for men, 176 pounds.

The SizeUSA median height remained the same (5 feet 4 inches for women, 5 feet 9 inches for men), but the median weight increased by four pounds for each sex. But the numbers suggested that people have not simply gotten bigger; they have gotten rounder in the middle. Women whose busts fit a standard size 8 were 2 inches bigger than the standard in the waist, and an inch bigger in the hips.

Women who fit a size 16 in the waist were 2 inches smaller than the standard in the hips and 1.5 inches smaller in the bust. Measurements did not differ much by region or by education – the average weight of the men and women combined was about 155 pounds whether people had less than a high school diploma or more than a college degree.

People who earned up to $25,000 a year weighed an average of 152 pounds – 8 pounds less than the average for those who earned $50,000 to $75,000, but about the same as people who earned more than $75,000. The real differences were among race and ethnicities, and age groups. White women were most likely to have a protruding stomach, sticking out an inch or more from the waist – what Mr.

Lovejoy called ”a little bit of a tummy.” Eleven percent of white women were labeled thus, compared with 3 percent of Hispanic women, 4 percent of black women, and 7 percent of those classified ”other.” Twenty percent of Hispanic women had ”full waists” compared with 10 percent of white women, and 15 percent of black.

Among men ages 18 to 25, 5 percent of blacks and 9 percent of all other groups were labeled portly, meaning they needed extra room in the front half of a jacket, shirt or sweater. But that gap narrowed or even reversed among men 55 to 65, where 42 percent of blacks, 32 percent of whites, 44 percent of Hispanics and 30 percent of others were considered portly.

Eleven percent of men over all had a ”prominent seat,” but that ranged from 24 percent among black men to 9 percent among whites, 8 percent among Hispanics and 6 percent among ”others.” ”We didn’t find any regional variations that couldn’t be explained as ethnic variations,” Mr.

Lovejoy said. The sample divided the country into three regions. About 60 percent of those surveyed earn less than $49,000 a year, and 20 percent more than $75,000. About 44 percent of the women and 38 percent of the men were married, and 45 percent had at least a college degree. Asked for their profession, 30 percent said professional or managerial, 17 percent sales or service, 19 percent students.

Sixteen percent of men described themselves as craftsmen or laborers, and 15 percent of women identified themselves as office or clerical workers. Asked for their perception of how much they weighed, 51 percent of men and 38 percent of women said they were ”about the right weight.” Ten percent of men said they were ”quite a bit overweight”; among women, 21 percent said the same.

7.2.3 Women’s body types in standard sizing systems – Throughout the world, various garment sizing systems have been developed. Most sizing systems for women worldwide classify and label sizes for different women’s figure types in order to give consumers with a wide range of proportions an acceptable fit.

Many countries have developed national standards for garment sizes that include options for various figure types. Women’s body types are frequently classified by height and by drop value, a measure of body proportions which is calculated by subtracting one body dimension (generally the bust girth) from a second body dimension (generally the hip girth ).

In the USA, standard women’s ready-to-wear sizing systems were developed for various figure types in the past. The Voluntary Commercial Standard CS 215-58 ( National Bureau of Standards, 1958 ) published in 1958 defined 20 figure types by height and hip types.

  • The garment sizes were labeled using a three-way system according to bust sizes, heights and hip types.
  • Heights were classified into three groups: short height (S), medium height (R, which stands for ‘regular’), and tall height (T).
  • Hip types were slender hips (−), average hips and full hips (+).
  • For example, 14R– was the size for a medium-height woman with a size code 14 bust with slender hips.

Tate (1977) noted that, although this standard had been adopted by the entire commercial pattern industry, ready-to-wear garment manufacturers were not willing to accept this system. To promote the efficient production of ready-to-wear garments ( Delk and Cassill, 1989 ), CS 215-58 was revised in 1970 to another Voluntary Product Standard PS 42-70 ( National Bureau of Standards, 1971 ).

  • By omitting the variation in hip types, the number of figure types in PS 42-70 became smaller than those in CS 215-58.
  • In recent years there have not been sizing systems for women in the USA that incorporate different drop values as a size variable.
  • However, as US apparel companies use different fit models with different proportions as the basis for their sizing, women of different proportions can often find good fit within a specific apparel brand.

The women’s sizing systems developed in England ( Kemsley, 1957 ), in Germany ( DOB-Verband, 1983 ), by the ISO ( International Organization for Standardization, 1991 ), in Japan ( Japanese Standards Association, 1997 ), and in South Korea ( Korean Standards Association 1999a, 1999b ) all classified and labeled figure types by height and drop value.

The drop value in each case is calculated the same way (by subtracting the bust girth measurement from the hip girth measurement), but the labeling varies depending on whether the size is defined in relation to the bust or the hip. Ready-to-wear garment sizing systems are often also classified by three height groups.

According to Cooklin (1995), in the English system, if a women’s height is under 155 cm (5 feet 1 inch), she belongs to the short height group. A medium-height woman is in the range from 155 cm (5 feet 1 inch) to 165 cm (5 feet 5 inches). A woman who is taller than 165 cm (5 feet 5 inches) belongs to the tall height group.

  1. Within the three height groups, six figure types are classified by the drop value, in this case labeled by bust proportion: very small bust, small bust, medium bust, full bust, large bust and extra-large bust.
  2. A very-small-bust body type has a 15 cm (5.9 inches) smaller bust girth than the hip girth.

A body type with a small bust has a 10 cm (3.9 inches) smaller bust girth than hip girth. The bust girth is 5 cm (2 inches) smaller than the hip girth for the medium-bust body type. The bust girth and hip girth measurements are the same for the full bust body type.

The bust girth is 5 cm (2 inches) larger than hip girth for the large-bust body type. The extra-large-bust body type is for a woman with a 10 cm (3.9 inches) larger bust girth than hip girth ( Cooklin, 1995 ). In Germany, DOB-Verband (The Women’s Outerwear Garment Association) developed a standard sizing system in 1983.

Nine figure types were defined by height and drop values, but in this case the labeling classified sizes by hip type. Height was grouped into average height ( normal ), short height ( kurze ) and tall height ( lange ). For each height group, three hip types were given: slim hip ( schmalhüftig ), average hip ( normalhüftig ) and full hip ( starkhüftig ).

Hip types were determined by drop value. The slim hip type is for women whose hip measurement is either 3.5 cm (1.4 inches) smaller or up to 1 cm (0.4 inches) larger than her bust measurement. The average hip type is for a woman whose hip measurement is 2.5 cm (1 inch) to 8 cm (3.1 inches) larger than her bust measurement.

The full hip type is for a woman who has hip measurement that is from 8.5 cm (3.3 inches) to 13 cm (5.1 inches) larger than her bust measurement. On average, women between the ages of 18-29 weigh 49.1kg, those aged 30-49 are about 52.1kg, and women aged 50-69 weigh an average of 51.8kg. Similarly, the waist measurement of women 18-29 years old is about 71.4 cm, the hip circumference is 88.5 cm.

Women aged 30 to 49 years, waist measurement is 76.1cm, hip measurement is 90.7cm and in the final age range, waist-hip measurement is 79.2cm – 90.7cm. The average total waist measurement of modern Vietnamese women, according to research results, is 75.5cm, hip circumference is 90cm. Surprisingly, this waist measurement is not significantly different from that of men.

This number in men is 77.8cm. The hip circumference is 90.7cm. Notably, women in rural areas have a smaller waist circumference than urban women with the figure of 74.7 – 76.8 cm, respectively. The difference is more obvious in men, when urban men have a larger waist circumference than rural men by nearly 4cm (80.4-76.5cm).

What hip size is curvy?

If you need to catch up, the answer to yesterday’s quiz (and part two ) is woman A is curviest and now I’m going to tell you why. Actually, I’ll prove it using the least likely of models -that of Courtney Love who is famously thin. By the way, this all came about because The Sartorialist found himself in hot water over his use of the term “curvy”,

This is a nine inch difference but does not hold true for all dimensions because curvy is relative, It’s math, not opinion. By way of comparison, a hip measure of 46″ is only curvy if her waist is 34.5″ or less, a difference of 11.5″. Using my photo of Courtney Love, I drew a line to match her waist girth.

Then I copied and pasted the exact same line at her bust and hip respectively. You can see there’s quite a difference between her total hip and bust girths as compared to her waist. So, bone thin as she may be, she is -from a technical, industry terminology (but not marketing) standpoint- significantly curvier than your average size 18.

It’s too bad that her hat is in the way but the green bar of her waist length hasn’t even reached the midpoint of her opposing breast. I know this is no comparison but I have another one further down using the examples of woman A & B from yesterday. The reason that plus size patterns are not curvy or are much less curvy is because as a body gains weight, the small depressions of the body fill in and commensurate padding isn’t added to the high points.

  • A useful analogy is illustrated by observing your driveway after a rain.
  • There are little puddles in the low points although the entire surface is wet.
  • As more rain falls, larger sloping depressions fill in further.
  • It isn’t until it floods (morbid obesity) that any low points are completely smoothed over.

Another reason plus size patterns are flatter as opposed to curvier is due to styling. In larger sizes, people’s bodies form rolls of flesh. So while it is possible to draft to emphasize the size and location of rolls, I don’t know anyone who would consider that a feature worth paying for. Now here’s the back to back comparison of a thin vs plus sized woman from yesterday’s post. On each respective body, I drew a line at the waist and then copied and pasted the same line over the bust and hips. In the image you can see there’s a significant gap between the thin woman’s waist, hip and bust size.

  1. This difference is not as pronounced in the plus sized figure.
  2. The bust of the plus sized woman is almost the same as her waist and the hip is only a bit larger than her waist.
  3. True, without measurements we cannot say for certain that the thinner woman is curvy but we can definitely eliminate the plus sized woman from the curvy pool.

A basic top pattern for the larger woman will be a trapezoid with waist and hip nearly the same and the pattern for the thinner woman would be an hourglass. The curvy-definition disconnect between consumer culture and the apparel industry may become a greater problem over the year to come; new sizing charts are working their way through committee and a dramatic change is the addition of measurements for curvy women,

  1. I told a couple of women about it and they became very excited but unfortunately, they assumed it mean plus sized.
  2. Curvy sizes will range (within the D5585) from sizes 00-20.
  3. Very thin women can be significantly curvier than plus sized because from a technical (pattern) standpoint, patterns for thinner people are significantly curvier than those for plus sizes.

I’m not certain what if any long term trend will result in adoption of the new charts. I only know that you will have to know the difference, Already there are dress forms specific to the curvy body type (I bought one ) and in a variety of sizes. Meaning that if you order a curvy form and were expecting a plus sized form, you will be disappointed and it won’t be the vendor’s fault.

  • Likewise, if you ask a pattern maker to use the ASTM dimensions of a curvy size 18 for your patterns, you may be disappointed to learn the waist may be much smaller than you had expected.
  • One thing is clear, the creation of a curvy fit profile means it is likely that pants sized for pear shapes may become more common and it is possible there will be a set aside for this designation at retail.

Frankly, I can’t imagine how retailers are going to pitch it. Slightly off topic: It used to be (has always been) that a simple 8-10 inches was subtracted from the hip measure to arrive at the waist measure across the board but using this,75 equation is more accurate because it is relative to the body in question -which is how we draft patterns.
