However, as both conditions are related to the circulation many people with Raynaud’s also have chilblains. Raynaud’s is a condition in which the blood supply to the extremities, usually the fingers and toes but sometimes also the ears and nose is interrupted.

What is difference between Raynaud’s and chilblains?

Raynaud’s Syndrome – and Chilblains, also know as Red, White, and Blue Toe Syndrome, is a condition that causes a person’s toes and fingers (and in some cases the nose and ears) to feel cold or numb when exposed to certain conditions. While there are many different factors that may trigger Raynaud’s Syndrome, cold weather seems to be the most common cause.

White : When your fingers or toes are exposed to the cold, they will initially turn white. This occurs from the vasospasms of the capillaries shutting down blood supply. Blue : Once the blood vessels are shut down restricting blood supply to the fingers or toes, they will appear cyanotic, or blue in color due to poor circulation. Raynaud’s Syndrome Symptoms Those suffering from Raynaud’s Syndrome may experience tingling, numbness, burning, coldness, and/or a bluish discoloration in the toes, fingers, or tip of the nose. Remember that some self-help techniques go a long way to relieving your symptoms, while others may be more harmful than good so always consult a podiatrist first if you’re not sure what to do.

How can I help myself at home? At the first sign of chilblains you should shield your skin from further cold exposure. If they’re very painful, try soaking them in warm (NOT HOT) water for 5 minutes before drying, then covering with a protective layer like vaseline or an emollient (moisturising cream).

  • A nice trick is to slightly warm up 2 pairs of socks with a hair dryer and then put both on.
  • This can really help to make those toes nice and cosy.
  • If you get cold, don’t try and warm your extremities up too quickly as this can cause pain.
  • If the skin splits or blisters, you need to treat these and keep them clean to avoid infection.

A podiatrist can help with this. You may need to take more specific precautions if your chilblains keep coming back, such as insulating insoles or medication. It is also important to get your circulation checked by a podiatrist too and if you are a smoker suffering with chilblains, we strongly recommend seeing your GP for help with quitting smoking.

Can paracetamol help chilblains?

Prevention and Treatment – Here are some things you can try yourself to help get rid of chilblains and stop them from coming back.

Do try to avoid being outside when it’s cold or damp – if you do go out, wear warm, waterproof clothing, gloves, thick socks and thermal insoles. You can take paracetamol or ibuprofen for the pain. Exercises like moving your feet up and down, side to side should be the first treatment option for warming the feet.3. Wear warm socks in bed, and warm stockings and slippers around the house. Do not use hot water bottles in bed especially close to feet.

Do not use electric blankets on extreme heat, only on a low maintained warmth. Preferably heat the bed before sleep or turning the blanket off before getting into bed.4. If you have suffered from chilblains previously and the area of the foot is reddened or even slightly painful apply Lasonil or Hiridoid ointment as they are vasodilators and help regulate even blood flow.

Does soaking feet help chilblains?

What are the treatments for chilblains? – If you have developed chilblains do not scratch them, instead use soothing lotions such as Witch Hazel and Calamine Lotion on them to take away most of the discomfort. If the chilblain has ulcerated (a deep break within the skin) then soak your feet in a warm salt water bath and cover with a clean plaster.

However, there isn’t much evidence that anything heals chilblains any faster than nature. Over-the-counter remedies containing menthol, camphor or capsicum that produce local skin warming by dilating small blood vessels do not help. Neither does vitamin D or steroid cream.

When is chilblains serious?
