What Does The Bible Say About Women Pastors
Student Opinion – God clearly says women should not be pastors, and that’s okay In 2019, reformed pastor John MacArthur said, “Women who pastor and women who preach in the church are a disgrace and openly reflect opposition to the clear command of the word of God.” The topic of women’s role in the church continuously spurs arguments and debates among believers.

  1. Whether it be a heated conversation about Beth Moore and her ministry or the ever-growing number of female pastors, the discussion of women leading churches in any regard can unmask possibly ill feelings in the heart of immature believers.
  2. Reading through Scripture, a few passages stand out that directly speak to the role of women in the church: 1 Corinthians 11:3-12, 14:34-35, 1 Timothy 2:11-15 and Titus 1, 2.

These passages are the foundation for the conclusion that women cannot be lead pastors in churches. In my experience, many defenses arise through these types of conversations, leading to an uncertain end grounded in cultural misunderstandings and eventual negation of the passages themselves.

  1. These New Testament Scriptures, as a part of the original documents, should be taken seriously.
  2. Believers should desperately search through Scripture to find answers to any questions they have; adding feelings and autonomous thoughts into the interpretation of one or two passages leads to incorrect theology and the risk of unbiblical division between believers.1 Corinthians 14:34-35 provides a good starting point for any discussion.

The passage begins with, “as in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silent in the churches.” The author Paul wrote to the church in Corinth. In the latter portion of his letter, he explicitly identifies issues regarding spiritual gifts and the misuse of prophecy and tongues.

The mystery of verses 34-35 is that it seems out of place after a fast read-through. The odd aspect of the passage is how Paul directs his instruction from speaking about incorrect worship to women keeping silent. In the current mind, no connection between these two subjects makes sense. Some theories about verses 34-35 explain how someone may have added them in after Paul wrote the letter, but they were still a part of the originals.

Other theories explain how Paul refuted specific statements made by the church or that he wrote about wives, not women in general. With any view, both verses are still considered New Testament canon. And just because someone may have added it in does not imply Paul wasn’t aware of it.

  1. Considering the context of what Paul wrote about prophecy, it could be understood as women not judging prophecy.
  2. Now, the question of women’s authority in the church comes into play.
  3. Why can’t women judge prophecy? The concept of judging implies church authority.
  4. Judging prophecy says, “my words hold enough weight to be valued as the authority.” In reality, Paul spoke to women acting on authority rather than purely speaking.

A woman should be able to say something within the church context because, looking at 1 Cor.11, Paul explained how women could undoubtedly prophesy.1 Timothy 2 provides more clarity: “Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing — if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.” — 1 Timothy 2:11-15 Paul’s reasoning here has no connection to current culture or possible misunderstandings.

An important note here is that Paul makes his argument from the order of creation. This order placed Adam, then Eve — man, then woman. Because God created Adam first, this gave Adam authority. God also commanded Adam about the trees of the garden of Eden, and that commandment passed on to Eve when God created her from man with the intention of her acting as Adam’s helper.

  1. Paul could have used the cultural reasoning of why women can’t act in authority, but he didn’t.
  2. He referred to “all the churches of the saints” (1 Cor.14:33), including the current church today.
  3. Titus 1-2 along with 1 Timothy outline requirements for leaders within the church.
  4. Each qualification refers to elders, overseers and deacons as male: “the husband of one wife,” “he must manage his household well” and “he must not be arrogant.” With the increased debates, I find it interesting that God told Eve in Genesis 3 that her desire would be contrary to her husband’s.

She will desire to exercise authority over him directly resulting from the Fall — just some food for thought. My desire strays from pure knowledge. My passion is for the local church to function as it ought to. Men need women. Women need men. God gifted each with beautiful gifts that he intended to complement each other for the sake of his glory.

  • God created man for authority and woman for help.
  • Men need help.
  • However, women also need authority.
  • Women should not help through an arrogant understanding of their necessity but through humility.
  • Likewise, men shouldn’t lead in authority with a proud heart and ignore help but ultimately desire meekness and understanding.

1 Corinthians 14:33b-36 contains the injunction by the apostle Paul that women should keep silence in the church. This text has given rise to the controversy as to whether or not women should participate in church public activities or in its leadership.

What is a women’s role in the church according to the Bible?

Opinion: What Roles Do Women Play In Leadership? Christianity is often criticized for being sexist or chauvinistic toward women. However, the Bible portrays a special position for females in the church and society. Christian women should have a major role in evangelizing and be able to serve because they share the same objective as Christian men: to fulfill God’s commandments.

Men are not biblically the superior or dominant gender — they just have different responsibilities. Every human is on an equal playing field according to God, distinguished only by their salvation and faith in Christ. The notion that women should be “silent” in church, found in 1 Timothy 2:12 and 1 Corinthians 14:3, refers specifically to instances of the church and marriage.

Without looking at the context, these verses seem overbearing. Outside of church, God has used many women to spread the Word and lead others biblically. Throughout the Bible, women have played a key role in fulfilling God’s plan. They have also held positions of leadership and responsibilities in spreading the Gospel.

Although Paul discouraged women having overt, authoritative involvement in the church, he acknowledges the female workers in the church and their efforts to further the message of Christ. In Romans 16:1, Paul mentions Phoebe, a female deacon or servant in the church. In other books, he refers to woman that held churches in their houses, such as Nympha in Colossians 4:15 and Chloe in 1 Corinthians 1:11.

Beth Moore is a popular female evangelist and author who does not pastor a church but speaks, often on controversial topics, to Christian men and women listeners at her large events. On Twitter, she cited, and the as validation for women to evangelize and spread the Gospel.

  • Deborah was the judge—a political leader—over Israel in Judges 4.
  • Countless women in American politics proclaim to be believers, and some have used their authority for biblical service to their constituents.
  • Former South Carolina Governor and Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is a Christian who on the world stage to defend the nation of Israel as the Bible encourages in Isaiah 60:12.

The website for the Christian Broadcasting Network quoted her saying, ” God has blessed America with greatness and with goodness and I know that in the dangerous world we live in, it is absolutely critical for America to stand up and have the backs of our friends.” These women of faith have integrated their beliefs into their political leadership and fulfilled biblical commands in theprocess.

Women have a biblical role in society from helping within the church to fulfilling the Great Commission. The Bible encourages all Christians — both male and female — to follow the commands of God in telling others about Him. Women can use avenues such as serving in church and political appointments to accomplish this charge.

Is there such thing as a woman pastor?

A pastor is a male, according to 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. Likewise, a woman is not permitted to teach (1 Corinthians 14:33-34, 1 Timothy 2:11-12). This is not a tertiary or secondary issue. The gospel is at stake in this matter.

In the Book of Judges, it is stated that Deborah was a prophet, a judge of Israel and the wife of Lapidoth.

In the beginning, the Lord placed the first man and woman in the Garden of Eden to work and keep what God created. The Lord allowed them to eat anything they wanted, “but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17).

  • The Serpent, however, approached the woman to twist, question, and contradict what God told Adam.
  • Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden?'” (Genesis 3:1).
  • After the woman responded responsibly, the Serpent offered an alternative position.
  • You will not surely die.
  • For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5).

God gives a clear word—don’t eat from that tree. Satan questions God’s Word and offers a different position. The man and woman chose to believe the lie, and it led to the fall of man into sin. In my last article, I asked the question: Does the Bible Allow Women to be Pastors? Scripture is clear.

  • Only biblically qualified men can hold the position of pastor in Christ’s church.
  • But this clear teaching isn’t acceptable for many people.
  • They respond with, “Did God actually say women can’t be pastors?” As promised, I have followed up on my last article with common objections.
  • I realize not everyone agrees with my position, and in response, alternative positions have been proposed.

Here are four of the most common objections with biblical responses. Objection #1: Wasn’t Paul’s command in 1 st Timothy 2:12 related to cultural issues for that time that don’t apply today? This objection presents itself with different nuances, but the basic argument is that Paul was only prohibiting women in Timothy’s church from becoming elders.

He wasn’t intending to make the command binding on the church for all time. The problem with this objection is that it neglects verses 13-14. Let’s read the passage in context. ” Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.” (1 st Timothy 2:11-14) Two things should be observed. First, nothing in the text indicates that Paul’s prohibition is due to a cultural situation—such as uneducated or problematic women teaching in the church.

Second, Paul gives us a two-part answer as to why he gives this command. “For” means because; meaning, the reason Paul is giving this command is because, “Adam was created was first, then Eve.” The first reason Paul lists why women cannot hold authority over men in the church by taking on the role of pastor is because it would violate the creation order.

Men have been placed in authority over women and children both in the home and the church. This has nothing to do with holding women back or being sexist. This is God’s good design. He knows what is best for His people and the church. The second reason is because the woman, not Adam, was deceived and became a transgressor.

  • This is a tricky portion of Scripture.
  • Is Paul saying that Adam wasn’t deceived? No, Adam was deceived because he ate the fruit and disobeyed just like Eve.
  • What Paul is saying is that Satan tempted the woman and consequently the woman led her husband into error.
  • Adam should have acted as the head of his wife and protected her from Satan’s lies by holding fast to God’s commands.

In God’s church, men must lead and protect women by teaching and obeying the Word of God. When the order is reversed, like in the Garden, we are taking women out from under the headship and protection of men; thus, opening them and the whole church up to Satan’s original schemes.

Therefore, Paul’s command in 1 st Timothy 2:12 is not based on cultural circumstances whatsoever. His command that women cannot teach or take authority over men is rooted in the created order and fall of man, and thus binding on all churches for all ages. Objection #2: What about all the women in the Bible involved in ministry? There are many instances in Scripture where women were engaged in ministry, and rightfully so.

Christian women are gifted and called to serve the Lord. That’s not the concern of this article. We’re asking the question: Does the Bible allow women be pastors? Many argue that women can be pastors, and they cite certain biblical stories or texts highlighting women who are engaged in ministry to support their position.

  1. For starters, what about Deborah? Deborah was a prophetess and judge who led Israel after Ehud died (Judges 4:1, 4).
  2. It is argued that if God made Deborah a judge and leader over Israel, certainly women can be pastors.
  3. But we need to take a close look and think carefully about this argument.
  4. First, the book of Judges is a descriptive, not a prescriptive, book in the Bible.

Meaning, the book of Judges, and in particular Deborah’s account, is describing what happened. It is not necessarily telling us what must happen. Paul’s command for churches is prescriptive. He is telling us what must happen in the church. Narratives, like Judges, are merely describing events that took place.

  1. They’re not intended to prescribe moral commands and doctrine.
  2. Bottom line, that Deborah was a judge does not contradict or change Paul’s command in 1 st Timothy.
  3. Secondly, Deborah was a judge during Israel’s darkest time in history.
  4. That she was appointed should be seen as a judgment on wicked people.

This claim is bolstered by the fact that Deborah tried to give military command to Barak, and he was shamed for his initial reluctance. Even so, Barak was the one who led the men into battle (Judges 4:14-16). Deborah’s story is heroic, but it does not change the fact only qualified men can be pastors in God’s church.

  • Another example comes from Jesus’ ministry.
  • Our Lord had several women who followed and assisted Him.
  • Then, after the resurrection, it was the women who first announced that Jesus was alive (Matthew 28:1-10, John 20:18).
  • It was women who “preached” the resurrection.
  • Therefore, it is argued, women can preach in the church today.

I have even heard an argument for women preachers that since Jesus is the Word of God, and Mary gave birth to Him, it follows that she also published the Word of God (that one is my personal favorite). These arguments seem to hold some initial merit, but let’s remember, they are descriptive, not prescriptive.

  • They are telling us what happened, not what must happen.
  • The gospel narratives, like Judges, are just as authoritative as anything Paul penned, but unless specifically stated, they aren’t giving specific commands of what we should do as Christians.
  • They are great examples, and they communicate essential truth, but in many cases, they aren’t telling us how to order God’s church.

Furthermore, these passages having nothing to do with the office of pastor. They simply portray women telling others about Jesus—which all Christian women should do! Time won’t permit to expound upon other examples, but I will conclude with a rapid fire of a few:

Priscilla instructed Apollos but that was a private conversation, not preaching. The Elect Lady in 2 nd John was not an elder but a reference to the church itself. Junia was “outstanding among the apostles” (Romans 16:7, NIV), but she wasn’t an apostle herself. She was “well known to the apostles” (Romans 16:7 ESV). Junia might even be a man, not a woman, as that name was not exclusively female at the time. Euodia and Syntyche were prominent in the church, but nowhere are they mentioned as elders (Phil 4:3). Phoebe was commended for being a servant to the church, not a pastor (Romans 16:1).

Objection #3: What about women who prophesied in the church? If Paul allowed women to prophesy in the church at Corinth (1 st Corinthians 11:5), then why would he prohibit women from preaching sermons? Prophecy in the early church was not what Jeremiah or Isaiah did in the Old Testament.

Those men spoke the unadulterated, inerrant, Word of God publicly for everyone to hear. Prophecy in the early church, on the other hand, was for the church, more subjective, and in need of assessment from the elders because there was no guarantee that it was free from error (1 Thessalonians 5:20-21).

For example, a man or woman would receive a prompting from the Spirit, share that word from the Lord with the church for her encouragement and edification, and it was the job of the elders to determine if this new word was in accord with sound doctrine.

Women were encouraged to share such revelations, but it was to be done within other parameters that have been set—such as speaking to their husbands first and submitting those revelations to the elders. These revelations are not the same thing as giving an exposition of the word with exhortations and authority.

They aren’t sermons. That job belongs to the pastors of the church. Objection #4: Why would God gift and call women to preach if they can’t be pastors? There is no doubt that certain women have demonstrated great skill in communication. It is also true that God calls women to ministry.

  • But these subjective callings and giftings should be interpreted by and aligned with Scripture.
  • All Christian women are called to ministry, and God grants some Christian women the unique ability to teach, but that doesn’t mean God is calling them to violate His Word.
  • When a woman discerns a desire to serve the church with her teaching abilities, she should do so within the boundaries created by God’s Word.

Practically speaking, she should teach women and children but not men. To teach men would be to violate the clear teachings of Scripture. Conclusion The Serpent didn’t offer to Eve a complete contradiction of God’s Word—at least not at first. First, he questioned the Lord.

Then he twisted God’s Word, and in the end, he offered a completely different position to the man and woman. Scripture is clear on the question of women pastors. But many don’t want to accept what God has said. Instead, they mimic the enemy by saying, “Did God really say?” My Christian friends, let us not question the Lord.

His Word is good and designed for our flourishing and His glory. To question and contradict Him not only brings dishonor to our Creator, but it will lead to our harm. Is it against the Bible for a woman to preach?

Christians are good at arguing with one another on hot-topic issues (especially on social media), but nowhere do the arguments get stirred up more than at the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). As I write this article, the SBC Annual Meeting is taking place.

  • Many issues have been and will be addressed. Some new.
  • Some not-so-new.
  • One of the not-so-new issues revolves around whether women can be pastors.
  • Last year, Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church, the largest church in the SBC, revealed that it had begun installing women as pastors.
  • In response, some members of the SBC desired for Saddleback to be disfellowshipped from the convention for violating the Baptist Faith and Message (BF&M), the doctrinal confession of the SBC.

What ensued was a firestorm. Some suggested that the BF&M be re-studied to see if it allows for women pastors. Others laughed at such an idea. All this to say, the question of whether women can hold the title or office of pastor is still relevant. What Does the Bible Say? The Bible is clear on this issue.

  1. The office, role, function, and title of pastor are reserved only for biblically qualified men.
  2. Let’s look at the Scripture.
  3. The Title of Pastor First, there are only two biblical offices recognized in the church by Scripture – elder and deacon.
  4. While churches have the liberty to employ different titles, these are only two offices required (1 Timothy 3:1-13, Phil.1:1, Titus 1:5-9).

When it comes to other titles and job descriptions churches might use (Youth Director, Ministry Assistant, Counselor), there is no direct biblical guidance on qualifications, including gender roles. The second thing to point out is that while some denominations and churches distinguish between the terms elder, pastor, bishop, shepherd, and overseer, the Bible uses those terms interchangeably to refer to one office—the office of pastor.

So, when we talk about an elder, pastor or shepherd, we are talking about the same office. One clear example of how these terms are used interchangeably is in Acts 20:17, where Paul “called the elders of the church to come to him” (Acts 20:17, emphasis mine). At the end of Paul’s farewell discourse, he said, “Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood” (Acts 20:28, emphasis mine).

In this one passage, Paul used the terms elder and overseers interchangeably because they mean and refer to the same thing—a pastor. Numerous other examples prove this point (Titus 1:5,7; 1 Peter 5:1-2). This is essential groundwork for the discussion because as we turn to Paul’s first letter to Timothy and look at the qualifications for an overseer (1 st Timothy 3:1-7), we know we’re looking at the office of pastor, bishop, and shepherd.

Underlying Theology The context of 1 st Timothy can’t be overlooked in this conversation. Paul says in no uncertain terms why he wrote this first of two letters to Timothy. “I hope to come to you soon,” the Apostle tells his protege, “but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth” (1 st Timothy 3:14-15).

Paul’s letter was written to a young pastor with the intention of instructing him on how the church should be ordered. He wants Timothy to know what kind of church he should build, and there is nothing more important, in terms of the church’s organizational structure, than who is qualified to lead.

Given that this is the context of 1 st Timothy, and that Scripture is binding on the church throughout all ages, we are to conclude that these instructions are for local assemblies today. When we look at the qualifications for an overseer (1 st Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9), there are several indicators that the office is reserved for men only.

First, the overseer must be “the husband of one wife.” Women can’t be husbands. Only men can be husbands. This seems obvious, but then again, our culture has warped language in many odd ways in recent years. Second, he must manage his own household well.

  • In Paul’s mind, men are the head of the family.
  • It would be unfathomable for Paul that women would take this role upon themselves.
  • Finally, the overseer must be “able to teach”—that is, teach the Bible to the church.
  • To Titus, Paul wrote, “He,” the overseer, “must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it” (Titus 1:9).

So, the pastor must be able to teach fellow believers the Word of God. Herein lies the major problem for women pastors. In 1 st Timothy 2:12, Paul said, “I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet” (c.f.1 Cor.14:33-35).

  • This passage makes it impossible for women to hold the office of pastor because it strictly prohibits women from teaching and taking spiritual authority over men in the church, which are the two most basic and important functions of the pastoral role.
  • Pastors must be able to teach (1 Tim.3:2), and they are called to rule with authority (1 Tim.5:17).

Women are prohibited from doing both. Therefore, women cannot possibly meet the biblical qualifications to be a pastor. If they can’t meet the qualifications, they cannot be a pastor in God’s church according to Scripture. This would mean any church that hires a woman to be its pastor is defying the Word of God.

Paul was an apostle. He spoke for Christ. Therefore, he spoke the words of Christ. And if He spoke the words of Christ, 1 st Timothy 2:12 and other relevant passages are the words of God Himself. Some churches may not knowingly defy the Word of God. They install women as pastors because they don’t see any problem in doing so.

That’s because they either don’t know what the Bible teaches on the subject or have believed one of the many false, alternative positions on this subject. In my next article, I will address some of the prominent objections to the position I outlined above.

  1. But for now, I will end with this: what I have written is a brief description of the biblical position concerning the fact that only men can be pastors.
  2. That’s intentional because a simple, clear explanation of the Word should be sufficient.
  3. When God speaks, we listen and obey.
  4. We don’t question Him or say, “Did God really say?” Otherwise, we not only fall into the temptations of the Devil, but we join him in his work.

What is the biblical role of a pastor’s wife?

A wife who is reflecting God’s helping character desires to sustain or uphold her husband; she strengthens, comforts, and seeks to protect him. Because of her love for the Lord and for her husband, she endeavours to dispel his fears by being trustworthy and gracious.

Can a woman be an elder in the church?

  • We find that Scripture liberates women and provides a foundation for them to use their gifts in the church in ways that defy traditional interpretations.
  • Women prophesied and prayed in the gatherings of the local church, they served as deacons, hosted churches in their homes, and taught the word of God to men in certain settings.

But, at the same time, in three areas, we believe we must stand and resist the cultural pull and uphold unique male headship authority as taught in Scripture.

  1. The husband is the head in his relationship with his wife, and the word “head” includes a measure of authority, where a husband serves, loves, and leads his wife.
  2. Only qualified men are to be the main preacher-teachers in the gathered church.
  3. Only qualified men are to serve as elder-overseers.

It is an argument we have not yet specifically responded to in our publications at Renew.org. This post summarizes my response by asking the reader to consider five key questions.

Was Priscilla a pastor?

Counter-counterevidence – Let’s return to Mark Ellis’ alleged counterarguments to the significant ministry Priscilla had. Notice that they have been proven wrong:

Priscilla and Aquila ARE mentioned again after Paul arrived in Ephesus. The believers in Ephesus did likely establish a separate congregation, a “church,” before Paul returned. Aquila and Priscilla DID introduce him to their “community.” It was NOT only “the brothers” (correction, “brothers and sisters”) who encouraged Apollos to go to Corinth, but also Priscilla and Aquila who were in their midst. It is NOT a great exaggeration to say that Aquila and Priscilla “discipled” Apollos. This was likely NOT one isolated, private conversation away from ( proslambano ) the synagogue. Here’s the whole verse: “I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.” Notice that last phrase. Is Paul instructing women to remain quiet everywhere —at home, on the college campus, on a picnic with Christian friends? Certainly not. Paul is more explicit about the congregational setting for these instructions in 1 Corinthians 14.

Notice my italics: “the women should keep silent in the churches, If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home, For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church ” (1 Cor.14:34–35). We can leave for another day what “being quiet” at church does and doesn’t entail.

  • Prayer? Prophecy? That’s not my concern.
  • My point here is merely, when Paul forbids women from teaching or exercising authority over a man in 1 Timothy 2:12, he plainly, transparently, simply means at church— that is, in the church’s weekly gathering.
  • The easiest explanation is not always the best explanation, but it usually is, and so here.

Women should not teach or exercise authority over a man at church. Doing so is illicit. It’s sin. In turn, that would suggest that, for a woman to teach, instruct, or exhort a man outside of church is formally licit (leaving questions of prudence and manner aside for the moment).

  1. Why then was it acceptable for Priscilla to join her husband in teaching Apollos? A number of factors may be involved such as the presence of her husband or the manner in which she spoke.

Likewise, if I personally began to flirt with unfaithfulness in my actions or my doctrine, I hardly think it would be sin for a woman (whether a fellow member or no) to approach me outside the assembly, open her Bible, point to a verse, and challenge me, “Jonathan, what are you doing?” Now, we still need to have another conversation about whether or not any given moment of instruction, teaching, or preaching of Christian doctrine outside of a church setting is wise.

After all, Paul grounds his church-located prohibition in creation design itself (1 Tim.2:13). This means that, even outside the church, a woman preaching to men risks rubbing against the grain of a pattern God has woven into his design of the world. The lesson here is not, “Women teaching is wrong in the church but absolutely fine everywhere else.” That would make his church prohibition appear a little arbitrary.

Yet notice that, once we step outside the church gathering, the conversation has changed moral registers. We are no longer having a sin/righteousness conversation, but a wise/unwise conversation. We’ll come back to this change of registers in a moment.

What is deemed holy, sweet, and touching by one group might be viewed as dead and dull to another. Everyone has his or her own opinions about what is appropriate or inappropriate in worship. The Body of Christ is composed of too many different groups to list them all here, such as Catholics, Orthodox, Baptists, Episcopalians, Methodists, Pentecostals, and Charismatics.

  • It therefore shouldn’t surprise us that Christians have differing opinions about the right and wrong way to worship God.
  • It also shouldn’t surprise us that most people assume that their form of worship is the most scriptural.
  • So who is right and who is wrong? Is there only one correct form of worship? Could there possibly be room for a variety of different expressions of worship in the Kingdom of God? And are we ready to honestly ask ourselves, Are my opinions about worship influenced only by the Bible, or am I also influenced by my culture and upbringing? What are the guidelines set forth in Scripture? You may personally believe that praise and worship with instruments, clapping, dancing, and all kinds of celebration is the right approach to worship.

Or you may be a person who loves a quieter, more structured form of worship with hymns and organ music. Either way, you may have a host of scriptures to back up your conviction and support your view of what worship ought to be. However, the New Testament basically gives us only one rule to follow in regard to this question of what is acceptable and appropriate in worship.

That rule is found in First Corinthians 14:40, where the apostle Paul tells us, “Let all things be done decently and in order.” The word “decently” is the Greek word euschemonos, Other than this verse, the word euschemonos is only found two other times in the New Testament — in Romans 13:13 and in First Thessalonians 4:12.

In both of these places, it is translated to do something honestly or to walk honestly. It carries the notion of something that is done properly as opposed to improperly, It has to do with intent and motivation more than outward action, although such a good intention always results in right actions.

  3. The Jewish historian Josephus used the word taksis when he recorded the orderly way in which the Roman army erected their camps — indicating their camps were orderly, organized, and well-planned,

The commanders didn’t engage in last-minute planning. Their camps were not hastily thrown together but rather set up in an organized and thoughtful manner. Josephus also uses the word taksis to describe the way the Essene Jews were respectful of others.

  • These Jews would wait until others were finished speaking before they’d take their turn and speak out.
  • In Josephus’ depiction of this behavior among the Essenes, he used the word taksis to picture people who were respectful, deferential, courteous, accommodating, well-mannered, and polite,
  • Taking these meanings into account, First Corinthians 14:40 could be translated: “Let everything be done in a fitting and proper manner that is organized, well-planned, respectful, well-mannered, and polite.” This throws open the door to all kinds of worship! It can be quiet, loud, soft, or bold.

The important thing is that the time of worship would not be something thrown together at the last minute with no thought or organization. After all, we’re talking about believers coming together to worship the Almighty God! Therefore, when we plan corporate worship, it should be well thought out and organized.

Additionally, our time of worship together should be well-mannered, respectful, and polite. A group of believers can be bold, loud, and well-mannered all at the same time. They can also be soft and quiet while at the same time rude and offensive. The style, use of instruments, and volume level are not the biggest questions in God’s mind.

The big question in His mind is this: What is their intent and motivation? If the group’s intent and motivation is correct, their worship will be accompanied by an attitude that reflects the character of Jesus Christ. So don’t get upset if others worship a little differently from how you are accustomed to worshiping.

  • Jesus is listening to their hearts,
  • He is watching to see how much energy and forethought they put into the plan before they enter into His Presence.
  • Their form of worship may be different than yours, but if they are worshiping God from a pure heart and with their entire being, you can rest assured that their worship is acceptable to Him! The truth is, God is more interested in the condition of your heart than the style of worship you use in the format of your church service.

So instead of focusing on who has the best form of worship, concentrate on whether YOU have an open, pure heart before God!

  3. Love as described in 1 Corinthians 13 is best understood as a way of life, lived in imitation of Jesus Christ, that is focused not on oneself but on the “other” and his or her good.

Love is about action, how a person lives for the Lord and obeys him and how a person lives for others and serves them. Yet it is also about being, This is because its foundation is in God who is love, and in Christ who shows that love. The sense that this is about more than simply how people behave is seen in passages like Paul’s prayer of Ephesians 3:14–19, particularly as he prays that Christians will be “rooted and grounded in love.” To “know the love of Christ” is to experience his presence “through faith” in their “hearts.” God’s people are to look and become more and more like Christ, and it is this for which Paul prays here.
